The answer to the first problem is:
[9][5] x [7][6] + [4] x [1] = 7224

The answer to the second problem is:
There will only be 3 lily pads that both frogs jump on - Number 6, 12 and 18.

This weeks problem:

There are 12 people in a room. 6 people are wearing socks and 4 people are wearing shoes, 3 people are wearing both. How many people are in bare feet?

  1. Hi,
I think that the answer is 5 beacause I added 6 pairs of socks and 4 pairs of shoes to make 10 pairs in total. Then I subtracted 3 because you have to combine 3 pairs of each. This left me with 5 people with bare feet.

  2. To solve this problem I first drew 12 circles which represented the people in the room. I coloured half of 6 of the circles orange to show the 6 people wearing socks. Then I coloured the other half of 3 of the orange circles blue to show the 3 people wearing shoes and socks. Then I realised I needed one more person to be wearing shoes but not socks so I coloured in the 7th circle half blue to show that. That left 5 plain circles with no colour so my answer is FIVE people had bare feet.

  3. First I drew a rectangle & some lines so I had 12 squares.
Than I coloured in 3 squares (they were the people wearing socks & shoes).
After that I knew that there were 3 people wearing socks already so I drew a line in 3 squares (they were the people wearing just socks) because that made 6 people wearing socks.
I also knew that 3 people were already wearing shoes so I did a small circle in 1 square (that was the person wearing just shoes) and that made 4 people wearing shoes
I had 5 empty squares left which meant there was 5 people in bare feet.

  4. I did a diagram and put the 3 people who were wearing shoes and socks in a box. Another box had the people who only had shoes on. There were 4 people who were wearing shoes so I took 3 away who were wearing socks and shoes from 4 and got 1 who was wearing shoes only. Then I put that in that box. The next box was people who were wearing only socks. There were 6 who were wearing socks,so I took 3 who are wearing socks and shoes away from 6 and got 3 who were wearing socks only. Adding up the boxes 3+3+1 make 7 so I saw the difference between the total of twelve people and the 7 in the boxes and got 5.
