Well done once again problem solvers!

Last weeks answer is

The number of children = number of different combinations of two different flavours.

This week I am posing 2 problems.

The first one is:

Place the digits 9,4, 7, 6, 5, 1, in the boxes in order to get the largest result.

[ ][ ] x [ ][ ] + [ ] x [ ] = ?



The second problem is:

Two frogs are hopping along a path one lily pad wide, going in the same direction. There are 18 lily pads and one frog jumps 3 lily pads at a time, the other jumps two lily pads at a time. If the frogs leave the shore one after the other, how many lily pads will be jumped on by both frogs?

  1. To solve the frog problem.

    The first thing I did was draw 18 lilypads in a line.then Then I used two different shapes to represent the two frogs and drew them on the lilypads that they jumped on. I could see that three of the lilypads had both shapes on them. So I think the answer is three!

    I won't be here next week so happy problem solving everyone!

    For the first problem I chose the biggest digits for the the 2 2-digit multiplication. They were 9, 7, 6, and 5. I put them like this: 95x76. I didn't do 96x75 because then you'd get 20 less. I put the 1 in the next box.This is because it was the smallest number. I then put the remaining 4 at the end.
    My answer for the second problem is 3 because the common factors of 3 and 2 between 1 and 18 are 6, 12 and 18.

For the 1st problem I tried different doing 97x65 on the calculator and it = 6305.Then I tried 96x75 and it = 7200.Then I tried 95x76 and I got 7220.I made sure that no other combinations of the highest 4 numbers would make a higher answer and they didn't.Then I added 1 instead of 4 because 7221x4 = more then 7224x1. So my answer is 95x76+1x4.By the way, the answer to my problem is 28884

    My answer to the 2nd problem is 3. I worked it out by drawing the lilypads and then I drew the frogs on the lilypads where they hopped.

  4. For the frog problem:
    The first frog jumps on lilypads 3,6,9,12,15 and 18. The second frog jumps on lilypads 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,and 18. The lilypads that both frogs jump on are 6,12 and 18.
